Daniel R. Langberg, Deputy Director for Interagency Teams and Planning

Daniel Langberg is Deputy Director for Interagency Teams and Planning. As a founding member of the PNSR, Mr. Langberg has served in many capacities including Deputy Director for Reform Integration, Executive Assistant to the Director, Deputy Director of the Project’s Vision Working Group, case study author, and Project Historian.

In addition to his work with PNSR, Langberg serves as an Adjunct Research Staff Member at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) where he has worked on issues of national security, foreign engagements, and interagency affairs since 2005. At IDA, Mr. Langberg co-authored a landmark study entitled: Snapshot of Emerging U.S. Government Civilian Capabilities to Support Foreign Reconstruction and Stabilization Contingencies.  This study, originally created in support of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, has been widely touted in the greater U.S. interagency for its unprecedented description of the U.S. Government.  Mr. Langberg co-authored many additional publications including the foundational Glossary of Terminology Related to Operations Involving Civilian and Military Resources and several reports on the military’s role in planning for conflict prevention and response.  More recently he provided analytical support to the standup of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and to the development of the Interagency Management System (IMS) inside the Department of State’s Office of the Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization (S/CRS).

Prior to his current positions, he worked in Washington D.C. at the Hudson Institute on a Smith Richardson Foundation-funded study entitled, World Order and Post-Conflict Competence.  Mr. Langberg also worked as a contractor for the United States Institute of Peace conducting in-country training and tutoring of Iraqi, Polish, and Moldovan government officials on the  interactive computer simulation - Synthetic Environments for National Security Estimates (S.E.N.S.E.) - modeling post-conflict societal transition and collaborative decision-making.  He began his career in Washington D.C. in the Office of the Secretary of Defense Networks and Information Integration (OSD NII) working on various projects aimed at increasing interagency awareness and participation on matters of national security.

Before coming to Washington, D.C., Mr. Langberg worked in several non-governmental humanitarian organizations in the Philadelphia area where he was born and raised.  He received his bachelors Degree from the University of Pittsburgh with studies in 13 different countries including an intensive semester-long Spanish language program at the University of Barcelona before completing his undergraduate work.   He continued on to receive his Masters Degree in Peace Operations Policy from George Mason University where he was also awarded the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Award for exceptional ability, involvement, and promise in the field.
